Brightness: 3 Alt: Description: Visible with 9x25 binoculars and bright in the 9x50 finderscope as a concentrated glow with a stellar nucleus. C-11 + 80x: Somewhat elliptical NE-SW. Broadly brighter in the middle. The famous dark band was very easy to see. The dark band is divided into two separate dust bands near the W edge by a slightly brighter sliver of light. A star is visible in front of the galaxy near the S edge and another (very faint) stellar spot was seen within the dark band. More details were visible when I first looked at this galaxy but the background sky was very bright when a finally found the observing forms.
