There are basically two files, a CD list and the Karnatic Music Primer. The CD list is a list of all Carnatic Music CDs that are believed to be available at present. It also contains some information on where you can get these by mail order (I am only a collector and have no affliation with any of the suppliers on the list). The Karnatic Music Primer is a little booklet that I wrote about five years ago. It is meant to be an introduction to the theory of Carnatic Music for the uninitiated and exposes the reader to ideas like raga, tala, swara etc. I have assigned copyright of the primer to the Carnatic Music Association of North America (CMANA). You can get a printed version of the primer by sending a check for $3 to CMANA, 375 Ridgewood Avenue, Paramus, NJ 07652. I suggest that you send a check for $3 or $2, as you feel appropriate, to CMANA if you download the file and find it useful since (a) CMANA is a registered non-profit entity and (b) it is for a good cause. The CD list is a plain text file while the primer is available in two forms. The primer was originally written in MS word for mac and the binhexed and stuffit compressed file is available. For non-mac folks, a postscript file is available (binhexed and unix Z compressed). File names, descriptions and approximate file sizes in bytes are as below. Enjoy. The only thing that needs some explanation is the postscript version of the primer. It is set up to print in landscape mode with odd numbered pages over on the right half and even numbered pages on the left half of the paper (the word document is also formatted the same way and you can print it using the same technique as the postscript file). The reason for this is that the booklet itself is sized to fold in half from the 8.5x11 paper size. With some creative paper feeding, you can get a print out that can be stapled in the middle and folded into a neat booklet. The first page can be printed alone and used as a cover. The entire booklet needs only twelve sheets of paper. Each sheet will be printed on four times, twice for the two faces (front and back) and twice for the left and right halves of each face. The following list identifies the pages that print on each sheet in the order front right, front left, back right and back left. Sheet No. f-r f-l b-r b-l 1 cover 42 41 about the author 2 contents 40 39 (blank page) 3 i 38 37 ii 4 1 36 35 2 5 3 34 33 4 6 5 32 31 6 7 7 30 29 8 8 9 28 27 10 9 11 26 25 12 10 13 24 23 14 11 15 22 21 16 12 17 20 19 18 Since the left-right positioning is done internally, follow the feeding order given below and it should work out fine (F and B stand for front and back faces of the same sheet; be careful not to turn the page upside down - that will result in the print on the two faces oriented upside down relative to each other). Feeding order: 1F-1B-2F-2B-3F-3B...all the way to -12F-12B and then 12B(again)-12F-11B-11F...all the way to 1B-1F. I have not figured out a better way to do this, unfortunately. If you have some (real) suggestions please tell me. Also, I am told that the postscript file may not print on some non-apple printers. Sriram.
