What you saw is likely a Deca Zero, which is the indoor/zero wind version. It has a larger sail, and holes in the sail that permit the frame to pass through. Mark Ricketts was in D.C., so the whole family of Decas was present. Um, no, that's not quite what you saw. The two indoor models of the Deca (the Synergy Deca Zero and the Minergy Zero) both have the reinforced holes you refer to. The bowed spreader's ends go through these holes. From what I gather, they're necessary due to the increased height of the Zeros' sails. Raising the spreader high enough to pass over the ears would probably throw off the kite's balance, so it passes *though* the sail. There are no lines running through these holes; the tensioning lines are patterned the same on the kites with matching scale (ie, the lines on the Synergies are different from those on the Minergies, but the framework is consistent amongst the Synergies). I'm fairly sure that the 31 shares the reinforced hole construction with the Zeros, though I don't remember for certain. If this is true, it's interesting in that the 31 has the highest aspect ratio of all the Guildworks kites, and does not share the lower aspect ratio of the Zeros. Jeff -- |Jeffrey C.
