Subject: How big is the kite-comunity?
I know that a similar question appeared some months ago at
rec.kites, but I never saw a satisfying answer (Sorry if I
only missed it):
Are there some hints, measurements, whatsoever of how many
kiters participate in rec.kites (active and lurking)? How
many subscriptions to the mailing list are there?
If my mind doesn't fool me, someone once had the idea that
everyone within the newsgroup should send an email to someone
in order to get a rough estimation of participation in rec.kites.
But I think this action never started.
My first rough estimation is a number somewhere between 23 and
5.000.000.000.
Any more precise information?
Robert.

Brian Reid's readership statistics, published monthly in news.lists
among other places, estimate that rec.kites has about 24000 readers.
His list also says
rec.kites is the 1580'th most popular newsgroup (of 3180)
680f net sites receive rec.kites
rec.kites carried 1.1 megabytes in 708 messages in January
10f the messages were cross-posted
rec.kites costs $US0.03 per reader per month to distribute
0.20f news readers (one in 500) look at rec.kites
24,000 people! That's more than will fit in Madison Square Garden!
Go team!

In this anarchy, we'll never know, but there are some figures we can muse
over. There is an extrapolated estimate compiled, based on surveys of some
sites. Last I heard, the estimate was 14,000, but that's a long while ago
and relies on rather a lot of extrapolation.
I've got a list of the number of different Email addresses used to post
articles to rec.kites since Nov 1992. This has some duplicates (I, for
example have posted from 5 different parts of the net...), but is a fair
guide to the number of people who have been active participants (but not
taking "leavers" into account. Today, the number of different posting
accounts is 1706, but it is increasing quickly: It was 1555 on 26th Jan
That's a rate of about 10 0rowth in the last month!

My request for people's details for the address FAQ a few days ago, will
produce another number to ponder...

How is Andrews readership reply thingy tallying with the official
figures ? I dont think that he will be able to cope with 24000
mail messages :-)
