N-1-2-20.09 The UNINETT SAMSON Project 1992 by Peter Hausken*, The goal of this project is to provide network access to all higher education (120 units) in Norway by the end of 1992. Coordinating student applications for higher education (12th year and upwards) has initiated the project, but the project will also give the institutions access to all the services provided by the Norwegian network for education and research; UNINETT. This includes: - Electronic Mail (based on SMTP and X.400) - File transfer (based on FTP) - Terminal access (based on Telnet and TN3270) - Conference systems (based on NNTP) - Directory services (based on X.500) - Information systems (based on The Internet Gopher) For those institutions not connected to the network (80 sites), the project has purchased equipment, ordered leased lines from the Norwegian Telecom, and will install it preconfigured with all services at the schools. A UNIX machine (HP series 9000 model 705) will function as a postoffice, Domain Name server, information server, and as a workstation. A router (HP ER Router) will transfer TCP/IP traffic between the LAN and UNINETT. The network is organized with network HUPs in each county and towards the four Universities in Norway (Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Tromso). Both the UNIX-machine and the router will be managed over the Network from the computing centres at the universities. Network management is done by SNMP and UNIX management by Palantir (developed at the University in Oslo). UNIX software will be maintained using track. This is done in order to make it possible to operate a UNIX machine at sites with no UNIX knowledge. Most schools already have various Personal Computers and a local area network. UNINETT services will also be available on these machines using Public Domain TCP/IP programs or commercial products. User support at the schools is provided by local computer staff, who are supported by the University computing centres. Training is given by UNINETT and the Universities.
