N-2-2-020.20 Electronic Reserves by Billy Barron* Here at UTD, we have started an interesting cooperative project between Academic Computing and the Library Circulation Desk. We are putting the library's reserves into Gopher. The project got off the ground with two major goals. The first was to allow students to gain access to the reserves of the library without physically having to enter the library. The second was to eventually offload some work from the circulation desk. Fall 94 is our first semester and is more or less a feasibility test. To start with, we immediately decided that we would not pursue the legal and licensing issues with copyrighted materials until the project was deemed a success. This left us with class notes and homework solutions. To simplify the problem, we decided to only scan in typed documents. Dealing with handwritten documents especially math solutions was deferred until later. The project has only been going on a month now so conclusions are difficult for us to reach. Other universities have been doing it for longer and seem happy with the results. One conclusion I can already make is that the most important part of making the project a success will be advertising its availability to the patrons. Our particular project is not available over the Internet outside of our campus. However, the Internet can be used to support such a system when distance learning is involved. *Network Services Manager, Univ of Texas at Dallas
