Synchronous rotary spark gaps can be adjusted to fire on the peaks of the AC current
waveform. They fire at the same points each time the gap is turned on. To get this type
of synchronicity, special motors (salient-pole) are needed.

The GIF files motors_1.gif & motors_2.gif illustrate how salient-pole motors operate, and
how to modify a conventional motor for salient-pole operation. Both GIF files are setup for
full-page printing. Disable any headers and footers, plus set your margins to 0" in your
browser to properly print these two files.
